KUEH KUEH at Jalan Besar

If you love kuehs (Asian version of cakes) you will love this shop located at Jalan Besar. Indo-Asian Delights makes and sells more than 20 varieties of Indonesian, Malay and Nonya kuehs. My favorite is the tapioca kueh and onde onde. Best time to buy kuehs here is just before noon as the kuehs are fresh and warm. Putu Bamboo is only available on weekends. The shop is located along Townshend between Syed Alwi Road and Maude Road.

Fried Mee Siam and Mee Goreng at Balestier

Located inside Balestier Plaza (01-02) is a shop selling cooked food. It caters mainly to office workers from this building, as a long queue will start at the stroke of noon. This is one of the few places I know that sells dry mee siam. Unfortunately, it is not up to my expectation. A good dry mee siam must be spicy and has a peppery taste. However, the mee goreng was good. Unlike the dry mee siam, the mee goreng was not pre-fried. It reminds me of the famous Punggol mee goreng but at a much cheaper price of $3. The mee goreng is soggy and spicy. This shop is run by a Chinese family. It also sells sweet potato soup boiled with ginger at $1 per bowl.

Cheap and Good Cooked Food at Upper Bukit Tmah

Located in a private housing estate along Upper Bukit Timah Road is cheap and good cza char restaurant. Hup Choon (Seafood) Eating House at No 1 Binjai Park serves excellent coffee pork ribs and prawn paste chicken. The coffee pork ribs is very tender while the prawn paste chicken is full of flavour. The sambal kangkong is average but the kow kee egg soup is very good. For four dishes, including rice and soft drinks, the total cost is only $28. The restaurant is only open for dinner from 5pm. It has quite an extensive menu. I noticed a number of diners eating chilli crabs and claypot fish head.

Curry Noodles at Hong Lim

There are about 3 stalls selling curry noodles at Hong Lim Food Centre. My favorite is the one from Stall 02-28. This stall has been selling curry noodles since the days of Ellenborough Market.

Roti Prata at Maude Road

At the junction of Maude Road and King Road, you will find an old coffeeshop with an Indian food stall operated by 3 elderly gentlemen. In the morning, this stall sells only Roti Prata. It is not the small, crispy and oily Jalan Kayu type of prata, but the good old traditional prata that is lightly fried with oil. They have been in this business for many years and definitely know how to make prata as it should be.

Nyonya Food at Balestier

I chanced upon this tiny eatery along Balestier Road while buying Bak Kwa during CNY and decided to come back one day for lunch. It was a right choice as the food was fresh and good. The cooking style was simple but full of taste, especially the curry chicken and sambal kangkong. The owner (I think) recommended their soup of the day and fried brinjal. I was delicious. I like this eatery because the food comes in very small portion. So if there are only two persons, you can order 5 0r 6 dishes and still be 80% full. The restaurant is located just below Hoover Hotel at 246 Balestier Road.

CNY 15th Day Vegetarian Lunch

I am back after a minor surgery and my first full meal was a vegetarian lunch at Gelyang on the 15th day of CNY. We had to wait 30mins for our Yu Sheng. A staff told me that all their vegetables had to be freshly cut. I think it is true as vegetables were really fresh.

The cold dish was very well done with each item having its own distinctive taste. Also good was the braised noodles which was topped with many ingredients and an unusual spicy gravy. The Good Earth Restaurant is located at 593 Geylang Road just after Lor 31
