Leshan, Sichuan - Day 2

On Day 2, we hired a 6-seater van for RMB500 for a day trip to Leshan. Leshan is about 166km southwest of Chengdu. Most people come here to visit the Big Buddha - the tallest stone statue in the world. Construction of the 71m-tall statue began in AD713 and was completed 90 years later.

We had lunch at a restaurant near the entrance to Leshan Big Buddha. We were ushered to a private room and served tea from a long teapot, at RMB20 each. We ordered Xiba tofu, a specialty in Leshan, chicken, radish, fresh veg and fish. The village chicken was all bones, hardly any meat. The Xiba tofu was quite delicious. Radish and veg were average. The "killer" dish was the fish, a carp. It cost us about RMB500 for the fish. For travellers to Leshan, be sure to total up the bill yourself. When we were given the bill, the waiter quoted RMB750. When we added up the bill ourselves, it was only RMB630. This turned out to be our most expensive meal in our 8-day stay in China.
