Hainanese Curry Rice in Tiong Bahru
If the find the newly renovated Tiong Bahru Food Centre too crowded and the food too predictable, walk down to 27 Yong Siak Street, which is about 100m away. Here you will find an old coffee selling cza char, hainanese style. The menu is a large colourful signboard with photos of 13 dishes. The must order dishes are curry chicken, braised pork and chicken cutlet. The curry chicken and braised pork are usually sold out by 1.30pm on Sat and Sun. On Sat and Sun, the shop closes at 3pm. On weekday it closes at 8pm. It is open daily at 8am. The food here is quite different from the usual cza char restaurant. The chicken cutlet is eaten with thick curry gravy, which is not spicy at all. The curry chicken is the dry type and is cooked with potatoes. Very tasty and again not spicy. The braised pork is simmered in a thick black sauce. Very delicious but a bit salty. The minced meat with tofu, fried cauliflower and egg omelet are all very tasty. After your meal, don't forget to try the mini-swissroll and chocolate ecliar. They are all homemade. If you are lucky, there may still be some extra tapioca and pumpkin cakes available for sale. The tapioca and pumpkin cakes are made upon order by customers.
